Welcome to the latest in a week-long series of spotlights profiling the bands and artists performing at Sound Of Our Town 2, a collaborative effort between the Boston Music Awards and Vanyaland. This second-annual party — another free, all-ages event designed to showcase our city’s vibrant music scene — goes down Thursday, September 24 at the Lawn On D in the Seaport District (420 D Street), next to the Convention Center and on the edge of South Boston. The party is co-presented by Narragansett Brewing Company and features performances by Tribe Society, Ruby Rose Fox, Bearstronaut, Will Dailey, Vundabar, Oh Malo, Mikey Holland’s American Denim and special guests, DJ sets by Ninja B and the Floorlords, and is hosted by MC Moe Pope. Bearstronaut
Real talk: Our love for Bearstronaut runs deep. Before this pink V became a digital music magazine and online radio station, it was once a small record label run out of an Allston apartment. The first band ever signed to Vanya Records was Bearstronaut, a Boston dance-pop group who at the time were doing the unthinkable in our town: bringing a live music element to the dance party. Vanya Records was born because Bearstronaut’s breakout hit “Moniker” was needed to be heard on vinyl, and the label eventually released the band’s breathtaking debut EP, Paradice.
As Vanya evolved, so has Bearstronaut. The band scored “Best Electronic Act” at the 2013 Boston Music Awards, performed at Boston Calling Music Festival in September of the same year, and is now set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live as a result of winning Converse and Guitar Center’s Get Out Of The Garage contest, which also netted the quartet additional time at an old haunt, the Rubber Tracks Studio in New York. Following up a string of explosive festival-ready singles, all of which further push the saturated field of electronic-pop to new listening sensations, Bearstronaut are readying the release new LP Telecoast, recorded here in Boston and in New York and San Juan.
While prepping the new record, the band has stayed busy with select live appearances (keeping the summer vibe alive at the Institute of Contemporary’s Art’s First Friday series earlier this month), and a DJ gigs, like the Good Life’s Vinyl Social and the Verb Hotel and Vanyaland’s Pool Party series.
