Earlier this week we shined a spotlight on Cambridge’s Out Of The Blue Too Art Gallery & More, which is throwing an ambitious 11-band-and-artist Back To School Fest this Friday night. The Central Square community space, which is currently residing in the old Blockbuster Video location at 541 Massachusetts Ave., has been adding more and more live music to its growing programming, turning the 6,000-square-foot room into a haven for artists of all kinds.
Yesterday, Out Of The Blue Too launched a Kickstarter campaign, seeking $5,000 by September 30 to secure longevity in Central Square.
“Basically we are trying to obtain non-profit status,” says booking agent TJ Edson. “We have a lawyer and tax accountant that are hard at work on it, but the money from the Kickstarter will be helping bridge the gap until we achieve that.”
That means keeping the 60 to 80 artists currently showcased at Out Of The Blue Too up at the gallery, remaining as an all-are-welcome community meeting point, and continuing to provide a DIY music stage for live music.
“It’s important for a place like this to exist,” says owner Tom Tipton in the Kickstarter video, which illustrates the various art components that make up the space, from paintings to a librarium. “It’s kind of fantastic. everyone comes in here… We’re gonna do our best to stay here.”
Adds Edson in the video: “This is a safe place for a lot of people. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world that’s really heavy, and I feel like this is — light.”
