In the true spirit of America, Dave Grohl rocked a light-up throne Saturday night as the Foo Fighters returned to the stage for a triumphant July 4 festival at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Now, the frontman with the world’s most famous broken leg has shed some light on how the Dave of Thrones piece came together.
Before the Foo Fighters performed “Big Me,” Grohl told the crowd, via the NME:
“Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you a story,” the frontman starts up. “A funny thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. We were on tour and we were in Europe, playing a gig in Sweden. It was a beautiful night just like today, a big ass stadium full of people. We started playing our set, it was all good. Then guess what? I fell off the fucking stage.”
Grohl went on: “What can I say? I hit the ground so hard, I broke my leg. But I met a nice doctor and he said ‘Look, you dislocated your ankle. I have to put it back in place right now.’ So he put it back in place. And I said ‘Can I play this fucking show now?’ He said ‘No, wait, we got to put a brace on you’… I said ‘How about you get the brace and I go play?’… We had a great show, but then I had to go get an X-ray, and I got jacked up. I went to the hospital and had a bit of surgery… I thought ‘Oh shit, we have to cancel shows. I don’t like cancelling shows’… So I took a couple oxycodones and drew a picture… I was high as a fucking kite. I said ‘I ain’t missing this show for the world, you build me this throne'”.
