The midway point of 2015 arrives tomorrow, July 1, and as it stands right now, there’s nothing that will get in the way of Kendrick Lamar’s genre-spanning mega-hit “King Kunta” from being in the top three of our Best Songs of the Year countdown. We’re just nowhere near finished with the track, which has played on a damn-near loop since it dropped a few months ago.
But Lamar has moved on, and he’s got more to say.
After performing “Alright” while atop a police cruiser at the BET Awards this past weekend (where he won Best Male Hip-Hop Artist), the Los Angeles MC dropped a video for the track, the latest off his universally praised LP To Pimp A Butterfly.
The track was co-written and co-produced by Pharrell Williams, and the video, already being hailed as one of the best of ’15 so far, has Lamar flying high over and across the urban battlefields of California, dodging violent encounters with police until they finally gun him down.
Watch “Alright” below.
