The Lively Lads: Listen to the Libertines debut a new song at Best Kept Secret Festival

Earlier this week Foals expressed apprehension over playing unreleased songs live, for fear of listeners judging the tracks via crappy smart phone uploads before being able to hear how they sound on a proper, recorded album. But sometimes we just can’t wait to get a taste of new material, especially when we’ve been waiting as long as we have for new tunes from a band like the Libertines.

So we’re going to hype up a crappy fan-filmed version of a brand new Libertines track, which the NME reports is called “Gunga Din.” The reggae-ish, Clash-like track was played last night at the Best Kept Secret Festival in the Netherlands.

Best kept secrets our ass.

“We’re going to give you one here but it’s got to be a secret, yeah,” says Pete Doherty at the beginning of the clip. “Put all your phones off and …let’s give it a go… see how she holds up.”

Not everyone turned off their phones, and so here we are — with the first bit of new Libertines music since their reunion was announced last year, and the British guitar rock band’s first new song in 10 years. “Gunga Din” will likely be included on the band’s upcoming third record, expected later this year on EMI.

Best Kept Secret continues tonight with sets from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Ride, the Vaccines and more, and tomorrow features alt-J, Royal Blood, Sohn, Mew, and others.
