Scratch That: Simon Cowell and Yahoo are developing a DJ version of ‘American Idol’

After a successful run of live-streaming concerts around North America, Yahoo is now looking to take a bite out of television viewership. And one of Yahoo Live’s ideas for original programming is an American Idol-style DJ competition called Ultimate DJ.

The live electronic-music competition series will be discussed tonight at Yahoo’s digital content and advertising presentation in New York City. Ultimate DJ was created by Syco Entertainment, owned by The X Factor creator and American Idol judge Simon Cowell, who will serve as executive producer of the proposed show.

Here’s word from Variety:

Citing strong traffic from the lineup of music concerts Yahoo Live has pumped out, an expansion of the concept will encompass more than just concerts. In a concept similar to Cowell’s “American Idol” and “X Factor,” “Ultimate DJ” pits some of the world’s most promising electronic music DJs against one another in pursuit of a Sony Music recording contract and headlining spot at a major music festival. Live voting will be supplied by another Yahoo property, Tumblr.

Yes, live voting will be hosted by Tumblr.

No word on what that Sony Music record contract will entail, and just exactly what constuitues a “major music festival,” but there should be no shortage of aspiring DJs looking to get on the show.
