Just in time for their gig this Thursday at the Middle East in Cambridge with the Prefab Messiahs, Massachusetts rock and roll gang the Fagettes have scrapped their band name. And they are now called… Barbazons!
Melanie Bernier, ringleader of the LGBTQ-friendly surf-rock band, relayed the news this morning along with a new track under the new name, the steamboat-stomping “Bad Catholics.” Read the band’s email message down below, but also check out Bernier’s very detailed explanation of the name change over at thebarbazons.com, where she reveals that some venues didn’t want to book the band because of the moniker and how some people would rip down their show flyers from public spaces. It’s a good read from one of the more thoughtful artists in town.
Ahoy and good morning,
After four and a half years of near-constant low-level controversy, the band formerly knows as the FAGETTES has follwed in the proud tradition of Jefferson Starship, Give Up the Ghost, and Bent Shapes by jettisoning their much-maligned moniker in the name of PROGRESS.
Ladies and gentlemen, enter the BARBAZONS.
If you’re looking for insight into this change, please take a look at singing/saxing/drumming Barbazon Melanie Bernier’s succinct and tasteful rundown over on thebarbazons.com.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE.
Not content with merely a new name, the BARBAZONS also look forward to issuing their debut full length album, AVEC PLAISIR on April 21 digitally and on cassette via KIDS LIKE YOU AND ME. The album has ten tracks and was recorded by Ian Doerr & Evan Murphy at 1867 and Mystic Steamship Co.
To celebrate the release of Avec Plaisir, the BARBAZONS will be taking to the stage at the Middle East Upstairs on April 24, 2015 AD with athletic and emotional support from their pals Doug Tuttle, Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion! and Atlantic Thrills, brought to you by Illegally Blind. Tickets are $10, 18+. Sorry kids. Refreshments will be served, but you gotta pay for them.
The BARBARZONS will be making their first public appearance as such this Thursday, March 19 at the Middle East Upstairs for the Prefab Messiahs’ maxi-EP release show with Fedavees and Secret Lover, and also in your dreams tonight and every night. See you there!
With luv,
the BARBAZONS
