Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art wrapped up its David Bowie Is exhibit yesterday after a 17-week run, complete with discussion by Annie Clark about the impact the Thin White Duke had on the music of St. Vincent. It’s a shame they couldn’t hold out for one more day, because today along comes the most fascinating piece of David Bowie artwork we’ve seen in quite some time.
German painter and sculptor Jessine Hein has created dentures of David Bowie’s old teeth.
The hand-sculpted recreation of Bowie’s original teeth were made with denture acrylics, plaster, acrylic paint. Hein posted her work to Facebook today, and we’re pretty certain we’d pay a few bucks to see these not-so-pearly whites in a museum somewhere.
According to this kind of bizarre in-depth look at Bowie’s teeth, the musician shaped up his choppers around 1980 in advance of his Let’s Dance record, falling into line with the singer’s more polished look. Part of his upgrades were teeth whitening, straightening, and cleaning up his gums. The profile also says he had another tooth upgrade before marrying Iman in 1992. Note the fine use of Suede’s “She’s In Fashion” midway through.
Take a look at Hein’s work below. Up next for the artist, we hope: Shane MacGowan.
