Touching up the Mona Lisa.
Giving Tom Brady a face-lift.
Sending Anna Kendrick to beauty school.
Re-scoring the Drive soundtrack.
All of the above are acts of futility, brazen attempts at improving perfection. Yet, for some reason — one that leaves us both unsure and intrigued — BBC Radio 1 and host Zane Lowe have announced a project that re-scores the soundtrack to Drive, the 2011 modern noir classic directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Ryan Gosling.
And the only thing more sacred than Drive itself is the film’s soundtrack, a breathtaking collection that features minimal, musical-landscape-shifting songs from Electric Youth, Kavinsky, Desire, Glass Candy and others. A few years after its release, the songs of Drive are interwoven into the film’s cult appeal.
But that’s not stopping Lowe, who has commissioned several artists to reinterpret the film’s score. That includes Scottish electro-pop trio CHVRCHES, who today offered up new track “Get Away.” Listen to it below.
Among the other bands taking part in the project, titled Radio 1 Rescores: Drive – Curated by Zane Lowe and airing in the UK October 30, include the 1975, Baauer, BANKS, Bastille, Bring Me The Horizon, Eric Prydz, Foals, Jon Hopkins, the Neighbourhood, and SBTRKT.
There are 13 participating bands in total, all contributing original material.
Here is CHVRCHES’ new song, which Lowe also premiered:
“Honestly, this is the most exciting thing that this show has ever been involved in,” says Lowe, via DIY Magazine. “It’s the most ambitious, awesome thing we’ve ever done. We’ve been working on it all year and we’re super-proud of it — you don’t want to miss this!”
Watch the project’s trailer below… even though it asks more questions than it probably answers.
