Vanyaland Premiere: The Wrong Shapes are a musical housing authority in ‘My Laugh Is Simple, Your Hips are Complicated’

Ever since the 2014 Boston Music Awards nominations were announced earlier this month at Sound Of Our Town, there’s been the usual, annual, and expected gripes about who got snubbed. Cambridge cello-pop duo the Wrong Shapes got playfully thrown into the conversation, though not on the strength of June’s eclectically sterling new LP, Reverse the Phase. But rather Bo and Rachel Barringer’s private residence, which has been doubling as a DIY show space for the past several months.

A makeshift acoustic performance space in a residential ‘hood (operated with respect for the neighbors, in case you were wondering) is probably never going to be cited as Best Live Music Venue in the BMAs, but the Barringers crib has been the spot of several fantastic, intimate performances over the past year or so.

For the uninvited, the space is shown off a bit in the Wrong Shapes’ new music video for “My Laugh Is Simple, Your Hips are Complicated,” directed by Guillermo Sexo’s Reuben Bettsak and edited by Jason Ramirez. The Barringers display a bit of musical ingenuity, which is echoed in their show-hosting ability. And there are purple slippers involved, as well.

The Wrong Shapes bust out of the house this Sunday afternoon to play at the second annual Tiny Festival of Huge Proportions at Cafe 939 in Boston, a showcase to benefit MGH’s Cancer Center Music Therapy Program. Also appearing will be Sound Of Our Town openers the Grownup Noise and the Impulse Powers (who we featured last week), and the ‘Shapes will be screening the video on-site.

See it before the masses below.
