Back in May, Faith No More’s Mike Patton tweeted out the following message: “The reunion thing was fun, but now it’s time to get a little creative.” It certainly got everyone’s attention, and suggested that more than a handful of reunion shows were in store for the influential Bay Area alt-rock band, who reunited after breaking up in 1998.
Now, according to Rolling Stone, it seems that creativity will surface in the form of new music.
Faith No More will release new single “Motherfucker” as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday on November 28. The long-awaited single will be limited to 5,000 copies, feature a remix from Foetus’ J.G. Thirwell as the b-side, and be released digitally on December 9.
And …it gets better.
“Motherfucker” is just the beginning, apparently, as Faith No More bassist Billy Gould also tells Rolling Stone that a new full-length, the band’s first in 18 years, will be out in April of next year. It’ll drop on the band’s new label, Reclamation Records, and be distributed by Patton own label, Ipecac Recordings, meaning this will be a strictly in-house venture.
Here’s how Gould explains the sound of the new album, which will be celebrated with a wide-spread tour (Rolling Stone notes the band has only played five cities since reuniting in 2009). Excuse us while we go shit ourselves.
What would you say the new stuff sounds like?
I mean… [Laughs.] What I can say is that I think through our experience as musicians over the years, I think what we’re doing reflects where we’ve gone since we made our last record as Faith No More. I think this kicks things up a notch. And I think there’s parts that are very powerful and there’s parts that have a lot of “space.” Everything we do, with our chemistry, the way we play; it’s always going to sound like us. It’s just what we do, that makes us feel good. Hopefully it doesn’t sound like a bunch of 50-year-old men… which we are! [Laughs.]
What would you say is the defining feature of the material you’re working on now?
If I can give it an adjective? There’s going to be a lot of space and scope — big, big sound-stage space — but I also think there’s gonna be a lot of those things that we already have. All I can say is what we’re doing just feels right.
For those who can’t wait for the end of November, check out a live performance of “Motherfucker” from this summer’s Hyde Park festival appearance.
