Art Beaut: Check out the five winners of the Boston Calling ‘blank canvas’ mural competition

Now in its second year and with three music festivals under its expanding belt, Boston Calling is looking to spruce up the brutalist architecture of City Hall Plaza.

Earlier this summer, they sent out a call to artists to create a 36-inch by 60 inch mural to be displayed at next month’s music festival, which will be headlined by Lorde, the Replacements, Nas x the Roots, and the National from September 5 to 7.

They dubbed it the “Blank Canvas” contest.

“We are always seeking ways to extend our connection to the community and further celebrate the talents of the people that make Boston, and the entire region, vibrant,” said Boston Calling co-founder Brian Appel at the time. “At this past May’s festival, every time we saw a blank wall, we felt we missed an opportunity to have an artist display their work.”

Today, five murals were chosen as the winners, and these pieces of art will be displayed around the festival grounds. The artists were also given $1,000 each and hooked up with three-day VIP tickets.

Here’s a closer look at the winning pieces, which are nothing short of awesome…
