UPDATE 05.20.14: The show is August 30, and tickets go on sale June 7 through www.redsox.com/tompetty. Steve Winwood is opening, and tickets are 48.50 to $133.50. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ Hypnotic Eye will be released July 29.
Move over Billy Joel and Zac Brown Band — Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are also coming to Fenway Park this summer.
Petty announced the show this afternoon via twitter, posting an image with his and his band’s name written across the Green Monster scoreboard (see below). The date of the show has not yet been made public.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ 13th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, is expected to be released sometime this summer, and so far Petty and his crew are booked to play Outside Lands in San Francisco on August 9 and Virginia’s Lockn’ Festival on September 6.
Joel plays Fenway on June 26, while Brown takes the centerfield stage June 28. The Red Sox have a few long stretches of road games in July, August and September, opening the possibility for Petty and others to fill out the summer calendar with concerts. The Sox don’t have home games July 11 to 17 (partly because of the all-star break), July 21 to 27, August 4 to 13, and August 25 to September 4.
The Red Sox, obviously, would need to be on an extended road trip for a large-scale concert at Fenway to happen.
