Yesterday we think we noted something on social media about how it was nearly impossible to screw up a Smiths cover after Skaters unveiled a pretty flawless rendition of “This Charming Man.” Well, here comes Pete Doherty of the newly-reformed Libertines to throw a fat monkey wrench into that idea, as this 90-second clip of him murdering the Smiths’ “Ask” has recently surfaced.
To be fair, the audience kinda fucked it up too. Everyone’s on the piss, it seems.
Content to not just sit back until the Libertines’ much-anticipated July 5 reunion gig at London’s Hyde Park, Doherty performed a solo gig at the Barby Club in Tel Aviv last night and filled his set with covers. Hopefully the versions of “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” by the Beatles, the Stone Roses’ “Waterfall,” and “Psycho Killer” by the Talking Heads were a bit more on point — this Smiths cover is total shit.
Yikes.
Doherty returns to the Barby Club for a second gig tonight. Keep those cameras away, kids.
