[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f Britpop had a taste, what would it be? Bitter like Luke Haines? Sweet as Justine Frishmann? If Blur’s Alex James gets his way, it’ll taste like “beverages enriched with added minerals” and “low alcohol beer.”
Just how we always envisioned it, mate.
The NME and Buzzfeed are reporting that the entrepreneurial bassist has applied to trademark the name “Britpop” for a new alcoholic drink. James has already cornered the market on cheese monikers; NME reports that he “holds the trademark on a number of different names for cheese, including Blue Monday, Figgy Pudding and Farleigh Wallop,” and UK shoppers can buy his product at Asda. But now James needs something to wash that down, and is getting into the business of pints.
It makes us want to shout Parklife from the rooftops!
Blur’s Alex James has reportedly applied to use the name Britpop for a new drink. City AM reports that James applied for the Britpop trademark in October last year and that it was published for consultation by the UK’s Intellectual Property Office last Friday (January 10).
It is not yet known what his plans for the drink are but Buzzfeed reports that James’ application covers “beverages enriched with added minerals”and “low alcohol beer” as well as “alcopops”.
Meanwhile, a new Blur record has been promised once frontman Damon Albarn finishes up his solo album.
