Interview: @LILINTERNET on his philosophy for living, working with Azealia Banks, and what the <3throb party means to him

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]eguiling hashtag commander @LILINTERNET is the quintessence of a passing meteoroid. During the day, the entity is most likely invisible, yet omnipresent. As night falls, you find yourself unsure of what you have witnessed. Was it real? Did you miss your opportunity to make a wish?

There are individuals placed on this earth to create, to ripple, to share their inherent knowledge. Julian & I have had passerby conversations of being “old souls,” which if true, creates boundless responsibility. The choice can be to dwell, to reflect, but as Artaud advises: “Never tire yourself more than necessary.’

There is much to be done & @LILINTERNET is well on his way.

Having originated the subculture of #seapunk, he also manufactures music that gives you chills, & his videos transport you into a fresh dimension. It’s not all serious; @LILINTERNET has the colloquial talent to express such deep-seated information with humor. As the creative director of KarmaloopTV and a host of videos under his direction (most notably, “Express Yourself” by Diplo) the one-time Bostonian and current New York City resident is coming up on the Halloween version of his six-year-old party, <3throb, which fills the Middlesex Lounge on Tuesday, October 29.

While the event is sustaining a FACELESS Eyes Wide Shut theme; we’ll aim to get to know the superb being behind the mask.

Georgette Bibber: Sup! Being that you are one with the world wide web I just recently found out that if you click the first link (not in parenthesis) at the beginning of every Wikipedia article it eventually will lead you to “philosophy.” Do you happen to have a favorite philosopher or “motto” to exist by?

@LILINTERNET: Whoa that’s weird I didn’t know that and I’m a Wikipedia fanatic. I like some Schopenhauer… Read a bunch of Cioran which bummed me the fuck out but was very entertaining. I love Baudrillard culture wise. Love the Situationists… Guy Debord. Hakim Bey is my personal Jesus. I have a lot in common with Artaud too which isn’t good. My motto though and the most important thing I’ve ever learned in my life came from a Charles Manson sample in a Skinny Puppy song — “Now is the only thing that’s real.”

Seeing that I’ve been listening to that song (“Worlock”) since I was 10 years old I should have paid more attention because only recently did I actually realize that it is the closest thing to the “secret of life” there is.

Recount the tale of your deepest & darkest Wikipedia-hole.

I absolutely do not want to talk about this. It’s that dark.

Your production with Azealia Banks definitely turned more of a spotlight on you. Rumors flew around that you two were dating. What qualities does she possess that particularly helped you two click? How do you feel about your current exposure level?

We both question everything and think constantly. We both are trying to figure out what makes humanity tick. We both have an insatiable hunger for new experiences. I don’t really care about my exposure level — I just want to be free. I think we both do and that’s why it’s part of the single we did together.

Speaking of producing, are you currently working on some things?

It’s very hard to balance music and video. I’m becoming more successful at video than I am with music, but I’ve done OK with both. I have a few concepts I’m going to start cracking on. But video brings in the money more than music does for now, so I can only work on music when my video work slows down. Expect more with Azealia though, a track with my good friend Spank Rock, and hopefully a solo record soon.

<3throb has been around since for 6 years now. I only started attending 2 years ago. Has the night progressed in the manner you had originally intended? Is there anything you wish to expand or retract upon? Do you think you appeal to a certain type of ‘crowd’ or are you more focused about your personal & shared enjoyment?

We started <3throb because there weren't any parties we liked going to, so we had to make our own. It's a really beautiful outlet for our creative ideas. There are some diehard fans, there are some new faces here and there. There were a couple years where we had lines around the block. There have been a couple disappointments...

I think we continue to do things nobody else has ever done (I swear we were the first party with YouTube video flyers.) Ultimately though, it’s my favorite party in the world. We’ve had some big names play it who have shared that sentiment as well. The vibe there is very special and people feel it. The crowd we attract is very diverse; it’s more of an attitude than catering to a particular subculture. It’s also been incredibly successful at being very popular while losing lots of money. It’s certainly a philanthropic venture, I’m hoping if I ever get convicted of a crime it can count as my community service.

Some fun stuff:

— What’s on your playlist these days? Jook10?

Yes Jook10 and Sunday Roast. They have a really unique sound that I love… UK Funky with weird late ’90s drum n bass influences. Other than that a lot of ambient, a lot of late ’90s drum n bass, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Dipset, Dillinja… I like music that starts with the letter “D” mostly.

— Fav place you’ve dj’ed + why:

It’s hard for me to remember. I love DJing at <3throb. I played all rap at a warehouse party in Brooklyn that Contessa threw that was incredible. I know there have been others but they all kind of blur together. I DJ’ed in London opening for Azealia in an incredible venue that used to be subway tunnels. The green room probably had a couple million dollars worth of art in it alone. I also DJ'ed for Azealia at her Glastonbury performance with 70,000 people in the crowd. That was pretty crazy.)

— Something you’d like to accomplish before the fireworks of 2014:

Get all my work done. Meet all my deadlines. Be free.
