Asking people to watch “The Wire” was a common thing in the 2000s, but today, we’re not talking about that gritty TV series set in Baltimore. Nope, our eyes are glued to HAIM, the pop-rock trio that came along and released a single of that title last month. They’ve this week paired it up with a cool music video, and it’s a classic tale of California heartbreak — engagement proposals gone awry, relationships suddenly soured, and endless hours spent alone in a darkened room going through a shoebox full of painful memories (like that guy in Swingers).
The video for “The Wire” follows three dudes who get dumped by the ladies of HAIM (rhymes with time, not fame), building up to a climatic scene down at the rock club. How does it end? Well, you gotta watch the clip.
When we hyped “The Wire” last month, Vanyaland’s Alison D’Arrigo wrote: “HAIM have long drawn comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, but at first listen ‘The Wire’ evokes the ghost of one Freddie Mercury. Opening stomp-claps give way to breathy and theatrical vocals. Throw in some charging guitar licks and a subliminal dash of Eagles worship, and our interest is piqued for fall’s full length release.”
That release, Days Are Gone, is officially out on September 30. But Boston gets a taste of the band way earlier: HAIM is set to play the Paradise on September 1, so make sure you’re all moved in or out around town and properly and celebrate Allston Christmas with So-Cal’s latest gem. It’s way better than that ratty-ass couch on the Linden Street sidewalk.
Here’s the song again, for those who hate music videos…
