Deer Tick get their Nirvana on, will play ‘In Utero’ on the 20th anniversary of the record’s release

It’s been a banner year in music for 20th anniversaries, from Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream to the Breeders’ “Cannonball” to other notable releases from Suede, Bjork, Mazzy Star, the Afghan Whigs, Blur, Radiohead, and Liz Phair, among others.

But the biggest one, perhaps, arrives September 13, when Nirvana’s In Utero turns the big 2-0 with not only a fancy-schmancy deluxe album re-issue, but the vaunted tribute show treatment as well. Shooting to the top of the hat-tip list is today’s word that Providence alt-country dudes Deer Tick will re-create the record the night of its anniversary at Brooklyn Bowl in New York. Tickets to Deervana go on sale Friday. They will likely go f-a-s-t.

September, as a whole, will be a busy month for John J McCauley and company, as their new LP Negativity — a distant relative of the “Negative Creep” — is out September 24 on Partisan Records, and the band plays the first-day of Boston Calling Music Fest on Saturday, September 7 at City Hall Plaza in Boston.

Perhaps, just maybe, we’ll get a taste of the In Utero set here in town. “Pennyroyal Tea” would be a fine way for Deer Tick to end their mid-afternoon set, we think.
