I think it was sometime around 2004, in the wee hours of Saturday morning, just as another pill after-party was winding down, echoes of “Take Me Out” flashing through my Gravitron of a brain, when I clutched my pillow as tight as my jaw and whispered to the stereo: “Franz Ferdinand, please don’t ever change.”
Nearly a decade later, and well, shit, I got my wish. The Scottish modern indie gentlemen have a new record on the way next month, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, and last night they showed off their brilliantly familiar sound on the Late Show With David Letterman. The Franz performed new track “Right Action.”
The track reminds me a lot of previous single “Do You Wanna,” but that’s not such a bad thing as it’s more of the same bouncy guitar-rock from Alex Kapranos and company. My only regret is that they didn’t perform the slightly more animated “Love Illumination,” the companion single to “Right Action” that feels like the real standout on the new record. But oh well, we’re nit-picking again.
Peep the video above, then scan the North American dates of the Franz’s fall tour. They get busy in Boston at the Orpheum Theatre on October 20.
