The NAT FRANKLIN TRIO formed in London in 1996, the same year SUEDE released their legendary record Coming Up. We’ll just assume that Nat Woodcock (piano), Andy Waterworth (bass), and Matt Gibbins (drums) have been a staple on the UK jazz and lounge scenes since their inception, because these recently recorded instrumental re-imaginations of three Suede classics are pretty phenomenal.
“After a successful show with Suede at Alexandra Palace, the Nat Franklin Trio decided to record some of their songs in their own style,” reads their Soundcloud page. “Mindbending version of the Suede classic.”
Indeed they are. “Animal Nitrate,” “So Young,” and “Trash” become different beasts entirely; the troika is a cool jazz/crossover strut through smoky nightclubs where the bartender knows exactly what Brett Anderson wants to drink and Mat Osman often gets mistaken for the doorman.
We were tipped off to the numbers by Neil Codling’s twitter account, of all places. The Suede keyboardist is a pretty good follow, and here are his tweets with the embeds underneath.
Go ahead now, start that July 4 BBQ off right. You know what it takes to turn you on.
The Nat Franklin Trio played some jazzy Suede tunes at Ally Pally. Now they've recorded some. Here's Animal Nitrate http://t.co/28wxxsay1K
