Massive Attack released their classic album Mezzanine back in 1998, and it still sounds like the future.
So it’s no surprise we look ahead today as the influential UK trip-hop pioneers have begun to reveal plans for Mezzanine XXI, a European and North American tour that is expected to land in Boston this March or April. The dates and locations for the North American leg are expected to be revealed on Friday (November 2).
Massive Attack recently reissued Mezzanine not as vinyl, cassette, or compact disc, but in the form of DNA spray paint. This tour, however will showcase a bit of a re-imagining of their classic 21-year-old record. “Mezzanine XXI will be a totally new audio/visual production featuring [Cocteau Twins’] Elizabeth Fraser and designed by Robert Del Naja with collaborators to be announced at a later date,” reads a press release, via Fact Mag.
Fraser is the voice behind Massive Attack’s classic single, “Teardrop,” so it’s pretty cool to see her involved in this capacity.
Massive Attack’s Del Naja goes on to describe this Mezzanine XXI tour as the group’s “own personalized nostalgia nightmare head trip,” and this audiovisual production has been “reconstructed from the original samples and influences.”
Other North American dates on Mezzanine XXI include D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, St. Paul, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Massive Attack, last played Boston, we believe, at The House of Blues back in 2010 for their Heligoland Tour.
