One of the better late-summer, early-September outdoor hangs of late has been the annual JP Music Festival, a free, all-day and all-ages gathering down at Pinebank Field at Jamaica Pond. Over the years we've seen people roll in to lay out on the grass, get some grub (hello, Roxy's), play catch, or just hang out and watch some bands -- and this year's 8th edition, going down this Saturday (September 8), features arguably its best musical lineup yet.
Among the performing bands and artists this year are Vanyaland faves n' familiars The Sheila Divine, Citrusphere, Sidewalk Driver, Hallelujah The Hills, Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?, and Ben Potrykus' relatively new project, Young Familiar. But that's just the tip of the JP iceberg featured throughout the day on an eclectic lineup that also features dance, theatre, and performing arts groups doing their respective thing.
“Part of what makes the JP Music Festival so special is that these are artists and musicians who live and work among us,” co-organizer Charles McEnerney tells the JP Gazette. “Every act who applies and can perform needs to have one person who either lives or works in Jamaica Plain (and performs original music). So since the festival began, it really has had the spirit of being among your neighbors and, most importantly, discovering some great new local music you would never know about otherwise.”
There's a lot of music and art to be digested over JP Music Fest's seven-hour run across two stages, so preview most of the bands below via their own Bandcamp or Soundcloud pages, or hit 'em all at once via this festival-curated playlist. For those looking to set their watches, set times are listed after the media jump.
There's also a GoFundMe page, set up by the fest's volunteer team, where you can donate a few bucks towards the program if you want to support the day but can't make it out on Saturday.
