Prodigy, one half of iconic New York hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, has died. He was 42.
Though the cause of death is still unclear, the man born Albert Johnson was hospitalized in Las Vegas recently due to complications from sickle cell anemia. He was found unconscious this morning (June 20).
A publicist for Mobb Deep has sent XXL the following statement:
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
Prodigy was in Vegas — performing Saturday night — for the Art of Rap tour, which also featured Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, KRS-One, Onyx and Ice-T.
Prodigy formed Mobb Deep with producer Havoc in the early ’90s. XXL called him “one of the greatest rappers of all time.”
