Now that we’ve all gone and downloaded Wilco’s surprise new album Star Wars from their official website, the band wants us to load up on some other cool new recent releases. Yesterday, the band posted a blog entry titled “Thanks for downloading Star Wars” — you’re welcome, Wilco! — and recommended a few other albums for our listening pleasure, among them Speedy Ortiz’ Foil Deer and Girlpool’s Before The World Was Big.
Wilco acknowledge that not every band these days can just go and release a free LP, so they want to spread the love and awareness to nearly 20 other acts making quality tunes in these crazy times. And we’re not just talking about DL’ing the records from iTunes or Bandcamp or wherever; they’re talking hitting up Newbury Comics or Bull Moose and dropping real bills on physical albums
Check out the message and list below, then go out and buy some vinyl.
From Wilco:
We consider ourselves lucky to be in the position to give you this music free of charge, but we do so knowing not every band, label or studio can do the same. Much of the “music business” relies on physical sales to keep the lights on and the mics up. Without that support, well, it gets tougher and tougher to make it all work.
With that in mind, Wilco has put together a list of some of their favorite recent releases. We encourage you to explore it (and beyond) and yep, even march down to your neighborhood record shop and BUY. There’s a lot of great music out there, lets all try to support it. After all, it’s the years of support (and purchases) of Wilco’s music that allowed us to do what we did last week.
