We’re all about the Britpop nostalgia over here at Vanyaland, and the year ahead should prove exceptional for Cool Britannia romanticization as several essential 1995 records turn 20 in 2015. But imagine our surprise yesterday when watching Taken 3 in a Boston movie theatre when one of the preview trailers started blaring out Kula Shaker’s 1997 cover of Deep Purple’s ’60s rock jam “Hush.”
The song appears in the trailer for the upcoming Colin Firth and Michail Caine film, Kingsman: The Secret Service. And YouTube commentors not privy to the mid-’90s sound of Britain are asking who, exactly, this is.
It’s Kula Shaker, lads. C’mon now.
Of course, we’re not entirely sure how this happened, except to note that the tune is a catchy one, and always seemed destined to star in a film other than I Know What You Did Last Summer, where it appeared on the soundtrack. And maybe it was cheaper than Deep Purple’s original composition.
Though Kula Shaker are best known for their 1996 debut album K, which spawned the UK hit “Tattva,” they broke up in 1999 after sophomore effort Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts. They reformed in the 2000s to little fanfare and released two additional albums, 2007’s Strangefolk and Pilgrims Progress in 2010.
Perhaps this new recognition will lead to better days.
