Imagine the biggest block party of your entire life, spanning across the city with marching bands and other musical acts with nothing but horns blaring beautiful tunes all over downtown with people dancing on every corner. You got the drinks, the food, and the fun. The perfect way to celebrate the lovely transition of summer into fall. Something just like that is coming to life a week from today all over the streets of Providence, and the locals call it PRONK!
The 8th Annual Providence Honk Festival — popularly known around town as PRONK! — will be taking things over a week from today on Monday, October 12, which is also Columbus Day & Indigenous People’s Day. Brass bands from all over the country and even one from Europe will be taking part, including What Cheer? Brigade, The Blackout Drum Squad, Extraordinary Rendition Band and Kickin’ Brass will be reppin’ PVD strong. Dirty Water Brass Band, Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band, Boycott Brass and Second Line Social Aid Pleasure Society will be headin’ down from Boston. Also making a racket are Environmental Encroachment from Chicago, New Creations Brass Band from New Orleans, Ten Man Brass Band from Seattle and even Les Vilians Chicots, all the way from Paris, will be making the trek among others.
What is also cool about PRONK! is that it’s always free and it’s open for everyone to attend without age restrictions, making it each year a family-fun target. Festivities start at 2:30 p.m. with performances happening at Burnside Park across from Kennedy Plaza in the heart of Providence. The parade starts at 4:45 p.m. and it’ll end up at Mile End Cove in the Fox Point area via South Water Street. Performances will start up on three different stages from 6:30 until 10 p.m. Get ready for a party that will be groovin’ all night long.
