Sound Of Our Town Spotlight: Will Dailey charts his own course for success

Welcome to the latest in a week-long series of spotlights profiling the bands and artists performing at Sound Of Our Town 2, a collaborative effort between the Boston Music Awards and Vanyaland. This second-annual party — another free, all-ages event designed to showcase our city’s vibrant music scene — goes down Thursday, September 24 at the Lawn On D in the Seaport District (420 D Street), next to the Convention Center and on the edge of South Boston. The party is co-presented by Narragansett Brewing Company and features performances by Tribe Society, Ruby Rose Fox, Bearstronaut, Will Dailey, Vundabar, Oh Malo, Mikey Holland’s American Denim and special guests, DJ sets by Ninja B and the Floorlords, and is hosted by MC Moe Pope. By now we’ve relayed the story many times about how Will Dailey reclaimed his career from a major label by self-releasing his latest, award-winning album National Throat on the push of a successful Pledge campaign and endless gigging. But the story doesn’t end with Dailey nabbing Album and Artist of the Year in the 2014 Boston Music Awards. Like any successful tale of reinvention and perseverance, the saga is ongoing, and Dailey hasn’t slowed down a bit.

After National Throat debuted in the top 20 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, the hits kept coming, with the Improper Bostonian naming it Album of the Year in their annual Boston’s Best issue. “Alternating between introspective soul and kick-in-the-teeth rock ’n’ roll, National Throat has the newly liberated Dailey flexing his artistic muscles in confident protest of an industry he’d found increasingly restrictive. Free falling never sounded so secure.”

This summer, Dailey jammed with Eddie Vedder at the Hot Stove Cool Music concert in Chicago, while finding the time to blast out a Daytrotter session. He then went from Daytrotter to globetrotter in August, covering three countries in his quest to bring National Throat to the people.

But the love still originates here at home.
