Editor’s Note: We’ve officially reached the final boss battle of 2024 as the calendar flips to December, and throughout all the chaos that ensues throughout these next 31 days, we are still dedicated to making sure you can find something to laugh to get you through. To help soothe all the panic that comes along with holiday shopping, heating bills, and impending hibernation, the one constant throughout all the seasons is comedy, and that is one thing that keeps on flowing. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. To help you make sense of all of the wonderful options, enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (December 8).
Lucas Zelnick at Laugh Boston
The relatability and genuine approach of Lucas Zelnick makes his show quite attractive, but his observation skills and ability to pack a story with details without dragging it on bring the experience to a completely different level. While not wildly chaotic, his comedy is energetic and exciting, which only makes the night better when mixed with his apparent enjoyment of bringing the whole room with him throughout an hour of constant laughs and intrigue.
LUCAS ZELNICK :: Thursday, December 5 to Saturday, December 7 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: Thursday at 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 7 and 10 p.m., $35 :: Advance tickets
Trey Magnifique at Lil’ Chuck
Moisten up your holiday season as the dazzling sax man (who only bears a striking resemblance to Brian Wecht of Ninja Sex Party fame, and nothing more) serenades his audience with the delicate rumblings of smooth Yuletide jazz in support of his new holiday album, Let It Blow.
TREY MAGNIFIQUE :: Friday, December 6 at Lil’ Chuck, 74 Warrenton St. in Boston, MA :: 9:30 p.m., $20 to $30 :: Advance tickets
Joe DeRosa at Crystal Ballroom
You better watch out, and you not better not cry, because Joe DeRosa is coming to town and you’ll be way too easy to pick on if he sees you. Join the hustling comedian as he makes his way back to Crystal Ballroom for a night of new stand-up, some holiday hilarity, and even a full performance by DeRosa’s band, Salsa Windfall. Plus, it’ll be Larry Bird’s birthday, and while that has nothing to do with anything on this show, the spirit of greatness will surely be present.
JOE DEROSA :: Saturday, December 7 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA : 6 p.m., all ages, $30 to $40 :: Advance tickets
