One of the most amusing aspects of CinemaCon is the discrepancy between all of the cool shit that the studios announce and show there and what from that presentation winds up as a late-night YouTube upload for all of us to write about. Case in point: Universal, which has a packed slate for the rest of the year and some cool stuff coming down the pipeline. The crowds got trailers and extended looks at Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf, Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility, the new Minions movie, and the sequel to the surprisingly fun Violent Night. Hell, they’re even working on a Snoop Dogg biopic. What do we get? Focker-In-Law. We know you gotta keep something for those out in Vegas, but Focker-In-Law?
Yeah, that’s right: Universal rolled up the Brinks truck to De Niro and Ariana Grande’s houses after hearing about how great Ben Stiller was on Severence, and presumably they did a bunch of focus group testing to find out if the Meet the Parents crew was “lit” enough to merit greenlighting a sequel. Presumably, they did all of this while on hoverboards that haven’t been used since 2017. Alas, you eat what they give you in situations like this, and it looks funny enough to be a decent family outing post-pumpkin pie come Turkey Day.
Peep it:
Can you believe that they’re being coy over a synopsis for something like Focker-In-Law? Yeah, us neither:
“The circle of trust just got bigger. This November, comedy icon and Emmy winner Ben Stiller and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro reunite, joined by Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Ariana Grande, in ‘Focker-In-Law,’ a new chapter in the blockbuster ‘Meet the Parents’ franchise.”
Focker-In-Law hits theaters on November 25. Credit to Ben Stiller: that “Project: Hail Focker” gag was pretty funny. Let’s hope this movie is, too!
