FYOHNA backflip into self-love with their single ‘Lie Down’

When it comes to songwriting and musical exploration, FYOHNA aren’t afraid to pull a 180. As they put together their newest tune, the stealthy electro-pop jam “Lie Down” (out today, August 16), the Los Angeles trio quickly found the single going in the opposite direction, lyrically, from their original intentions. What was meant to harp on the bitter and brutal parts of the emotional spectrum instead bursts into a literal ode to joy.

“When I started writing it I thought it was about jealousy and competition, but as songs often do, it evolved, and the meaning couldn’t have been more opposite,” says vocalist-songwriter Katarina Gleicher. “My interpretation is self-acceptance, self-love and loving freely. When I think about the question this song is asking and the answer I get from it, it’s ‘who loved you better?’ I loved me better. No one can hold me like me and no one can love me like me.”

No one can make a slinky gem quite like FYOHNA, either. Press play on “Lie Down” below.
