IFFBoston Preview Part I: Southern criminals, teenage soldiers, absurdist suburbanites

If you're a Boston-baserd cinephile, this is undoubtedly one of the most exciting times of the year for you, as the Independent Film Festival Boston has returned with one of their strongest line-ups ever. Running from April 24 through May 1 at the Brattle, Somerville and Coolidge Corner Theatres, there's so many great movies showing at this year's Festival that we've had to split our preview up into three parts. Check back soon for our second and third pieces about this year's lineup, but for now, here are some choice cuts from the first three days of the festival's programming. Tickets and more information are available at the IFFBoston website.

Shadow

Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Somerville Theatre

Look, we know that the very words “a new film by Zhang Yimou” should be enough to get you into the theater, but we realize that it’s been a little while since Yimou had a movie in theaters that, well, didn’t have Matt Damon in it. Yes, the director of wuxia classics like Hero and House of Flying Daggers has returned, and he’s brought his brand of gorgeously-photographed martial arts action back with him. Yimou tells a tale of doppelgängers in Imperial China, as a military commander (Deng Chao) recruits a lookalike to be his “shadow” as he prepares a large attack on another state. It’s practically guaranteed to be beautiful, so make sure to hit this up if you care about Kung Fu.
