‘Overlord’ Trailer: WWII horror from J.J. Abrams? Sign us up!

A few months back, it seemed like everybody online and their mothers thought that the Julius Avery-directed, J.J. Abrams-produced World War II-set horror film Overlord was going to be another installment in the Cloverfield franchise, but once the first true details about the project emerged from Cinemacon this year, that herd thinned considerably (and after The Cloverfield Paradox, why is anybody hoping for another Cloverfield movie anytime soon?).

Now only the most deluded r/cloververse stan would have cause to be bitter about the first trailer for the film, which Paramount dropped on Wednesday, as features some incredible action and the first usage of AC/DC in a movie trailer in quite some time that didn’t automatically make it look like a Cialis commercial. That massive feat alone is worth a great deal of commendation, perhaps even a Nobel Peace Prize.

Peep it:

Well, that’s one hell of a trailer! We’ve got some pretty decent action, some decently shocking gore just for a fucking trailer (we’re kind of shocked you clicked on this, with that header image), and a cast of Hollywood’s most underrated young actors (Wyatt Russell from Everybody Wants Some!! and Jovan Adepo from Fences) to round things out. It looks steeped pretty heavily in the World War II genre tradition, pulling in all sorts of things from the beloved (The Dirty Dozen, the BPRD comics) to the reviled (don’t tell us we’re the only ones who get a Dead Snow vibe from this).

We’re excited to see this twisted vision of the past, though we’re already fearing the response from mouth-breathing Cloverfield devotees who can’t see anything beyond that franchise. Just because this isn’t branded in the way you might have hoped doesn’t mean the movie won’t be good, guys. Give it a shot, okay?

Overlord hits theaters on November 9.
