Courtney Barnett takes on internet trolls and real-life fears on ‘Nameless, Faceless’

Courtney Barnett wants to give anonymous internet trolls a hug.

The Australian musician and lyricist today released a new song called “Nameless, Faceless,” and it takes on our current culture of online toxicity. As usual, Barnett’s lyrics are at the forefront.

Don’t you have anything better to do
I wish that someone would hug you
Must be lonely
Being angry
Feeling over-looked.
You sit alone at home in the darkness
With all the pent-up rage that you harness
I’m real sorry
Bout whatever happened to you

For the jangle-pop track’s chorus, Barnett takes on a more real-life issue, borrowing from a famous Margaret Atwood quote:

I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Men are scared that women will laugh at them
I wanna walk through the park in the dark
Women are scared that men will kill them
I hold my keys
Between my fingers

The musically upbeat “Nameless, Faceless” will be featured on Barnett’s upcoming sophomore album Tell Me How You Really Feel, which hits May 18 via Marathon Artists/Milk! Records. It’s the follow-up to her breakout 2015 LP Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.
