New Sounds: Chelsea Wolfe grinds it out in the seductively menacing video for ‘Spun’

In a show that’s so seasonally-appropriate it warms our cold black souls, Chelsea Wolfe and Youth Code play a very sold-out show Thursday night (October 19) at The Sinclair. We were going to cover it via photo gallery, and leave it at that; until Wolfe released her new video for “Spun,” the latest track off last month’s Hiss Spun LP, and well, we pretty much stopped everything we were doing to post it immediately.

The seductively menacing red-lit video was directed by Wolfe, and shot in Sacramento. And we can’t take our eyes off it.

“Jess, Ben, and I had a lot of fun making this video in the back of a musty old limo in Sacramento with some lovely friends, and featuring pole dancer Felicia Drake,” Wolfe says in a presser. “I noticed Felicia tagging me in Instagram videos of her dancing to my songs and thought it was so stunning and empowering, so I reached out to see if she wanted to collaborate on this video. Happily, she was in! She is the siren we seek on our fucked-up journey through memories and dreams.”

Wolfe says additional inspiration came from ’90s-era videos like Nine Inch Nails’ “Starfuckers,” Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” and Garbage’s “Stupid Girl,” as well as “from our own lives ‘cause this shit is DIY!”

Hiss Spun was recorded at GodCity Studio in Salem with Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, and you can really hear the heaviness in this latest track, which features Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age. Watch the video below, wipe the sweat from your brow, and check out all of Wolfe’s upcoming tour dates after the jump.
