New Sounds: Wake up (or don’t) with Morrissey’s new single ‘Spent The Day In Bed’

You may or may not want to wake up early this morning, because Morrissey has released a new single called “Spent The Day In Bed.” The feathery track is the first selection from his forthcoming album, Low In High School, due November 17 via BMG/Etienne, and was premiered Tuesday morning on BBC 6 Music.

Though the song is a slight musical departure from his previous solo material, it does contain some true-to-you lyrical play, with Moz warning us to “Stop watching the news because the news contrives to frighten you/To make you feel small and alone/To make you feel that your mind isn’t your own.” It closes with a refrain that many on the MBTA in Boston this morning will be mouthing along on their morning commute: “No bus, no boss, no rain, no train.”

Low In High School was recorded at La Fabrique Studios in France and Ennio Morricone’s Forum Studios in Rome, and was produced by Joe Chiccarelli. It’s Moz’s first studio album following 2014’s World Peace Is None Of Your Business.

Check out the track list below, and enjoy some perfect Morrissey titles like “I Bury The Living,” “The Girl From Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn’t Kneel,” and “Who Will Protect Us From The Police?”

Yesterday, Morrissey fired off his first tweets @officialmoz, first teasing the new single, then outlining what appear to be a series of North American city abbreviations: “OR WA CA AZ UT CO MO IL MI DC NY PA MA.”

While it looks like that “MA” show won’t happen next month like Spotify once suggested, our spies tell us a Morrissey show in Boston could happen in December. Happy holidays.
