New Sounds: L.A. Witch conjure up a hazy garage rock dream on ‘Baby In Blue Jeans’

Sometimes the scheduling gods have everyone’s best interests in mind. Take the case of L.A. Witch, a Los Angeles trio who are touring North America this fall. The band is headed out on a 37-date run that encompasses much of October and November, and thankfully, they don’t cross into Massachusetts borders until after Halloween (November 6 at the Middle East in Cambridge). And we’re grateful, because while much of Boston and its North Shore neighbors in Salem go batshit crazy for the holiday and all things associated with it, L.A. Witch, the band, have very little to do with spooky sounds and sonic witchcraft.

Instead, Sade, Irita, and Ellie conjure up a hazy type of ’60s-pop garage rock, the type of reverb-enchanted seance Dum Dum Girls used to swirl around before Kristin went electro. Their late-summer single “Baby In Blue Jeans” is a hypnotic twirl around psychedelic fantasies, the type of sound that would not be out of place on a Fuzzstival lineup or a Lana Del Rey tumblr feed. It follows recent cut “Untitled,” another calculated cool guitar-rock bopper that ups the jangle and flirts with twang. The songs themselves have their own immediate identity.

“Baby In Blue Jeans” and “Untitled” are shaping L.A. Witch’s debut album rather nicely, and the LP hits September 8 via Suicide Squeeze Records. Listen to “Baby In Blue Jeans” and “Untitled” below, and scan through all their fall tour dates after the Soundcloud jump.

Oh, and in case you can’t help but wonder — L.A. Witch play Baltimore on Halloween night.
