New Sounds: Black Pistol Fire find their raucous side on ‘Lost Cause’

Austin-by-way-of-Canada rock duo Black Pistol Fire have announced September 29 as the release date for their fifth album, Deadbeat Graffiti, and this week dropped the first single, “Lost Cause.” The track opens the record, and has that jittery, garage rock feel the band have perfected over the years.

The “lovestruck anthem,” as the pair have dubbed it, kicks off with a shaky riff from singer/guitarist Kevin McKeown before drummer Eric Owen skitters in with a rat-a-tat beat and then the two unite into the main groove. McKeown laments seeing no way out alive, so there’s really not a bunch of happiness lyrically, but the track rocks so damn hard it’s infectious. As to whether it’s indicative of the rest of the material on the 12-track Deadbeat Graffiti — don’t bet on it.

“Our fifth album is a representation of our listening habits,” McKeown and Owen say in a joint statement. “It has a roller coaster effect, with many different tempos and influences ranging from garage-punk, to hip-hop, soul, and everything else that we may listen to on a given day. It is meant to act like a mixtape or Spotify playlist, where the listener won’t know what’ll hit them next!”

Black Pistol Fire have also announced a fall tour of North America, including a stop at The Sinclair October 17. Tickets go on sale today.
