The most unexpected and fascinating names to appear on the new season of ‘Twin Peaks’

Yesterday, we brought you a list of musicians that we were excited to see on screen in the new season of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks, which premieres on Showtime this Sunday (May 21) at 9 p.m..

We thought it only fitting to return back to the same 217-person cast list that we pulled that list from, and find the most unexpected and fascinating names on that list from all other walks of life -- actors, athletes, stuntmen -- and use that as a way to preview how different and unexpected this new season might be.

Unexpected, yes -- just like David Lynch doing the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Jim Belushi

Now here’s the casting that caused all of the cinephiles in the bunch to wonder if David Lynch had finally lost his goddamn mind. Yep, that’s right — according to Jim (and this cast list), the star of According to Jim and plenty of just terrible films will be making an appearance this season. Belushi’s a popular punching bag for people on film and TV twitter, and honestly, he hasn’t done too much to reject that status. Still, if anybody can make him look good, it’s Lynch, who gave Billy Ray Cyrus a spot in a movie that would be later put into the Criterion Collection. In this clip from Red Heat, a nearly contemporaneous theatrical work with the first season of Twin Peaks, Belushi’s rude to a waitress and asks Arnold a hell of a lot of personal questions about his family back in Mother Russia. It’s a good summation of his career.
