Free Spirit: Foxygen throw it back to 1976 with American Girl Story song ‘Be Yourself’

Foxygen are rolling into Boston this Saturday (March 25) for a show at the Paradise Rock Club, but before they do, the California duo are taking a time machine back to 1976.

As part of the upcoming Amazon’s An American Girl Story — Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance, Foxygen have shared a new song called “Be Yourself.” It follows Best Coast’s holiday contribution for An American Girl Story — Maryellen 1955: Extraordinary Christmas, and this latest chapter in the series is set in 1976 San Francisco and centers around a young Asian-American girl struggling with finding a balance between her cultural identities.

Finding a sound true to the era, “Be Yourself” was written and recorded by Foxygen’s Sam France and Jonathan Rado on analog equipment with a throwback mindset. “We love the ‘70s, and we remember the dolls from when we were growing up, so we felt we were right for the job,” says France. “We wrote our song inspired by ‘70s television show theme songs. It is also a special song because it is the only Foxygen song so far to feature Rado on lead vocals in the first verse.”

The track will be available exclusively to download and stream on Amazon Music (Amazon Music Unlimited and Prime Music) starting tomorrow, but you can grab a peek listen via Soundcloud below. Featured Foxygen photo by Cara Robbins.
