Watch: The creepy trailer for ‘It Comes At Night’ is 96 seconds of pure terror

How in the hell does A24 keep making such interesting movies? You’d figure they’d mess it up every once in awhile, but no, the studio that brought you hits like Room and The Witch and early best-of-the-century picks like Under the Skin and Moonlight just seems to have a great eye for talent and the funds to back it up. It’s like it’s 1939 all over again with them, where you’ve got a different classic coming out every month, and it looks like they’ll continue their hot streak. Today they dropped a teaser trailer for August release It Comes At Night and holy shit, drop everything you’re doing and watch this motherfucker.

No, really, you’re not going to get spoiled or anything — things happen in the latter half of the trailer at such a clip you won’t even really be able to tell what’s going on, and the majority of the first bit is just a hallway and some narration. It’s 96 seconds of pure terror, and it, unlike a lot of Hollywood releases, understands that a quick taste of what’s to come might be a little more effective than rolling out the whole damn third act in the first teaser. I mean aside from that it stars Joel Edgerton and Riley Keough, and was directed by Trey Edward Shults (the director of the underseen and fabulous Krista, currently streaming on Amazon Prime if this motivates you to take a look) what else do you really know about it other than it’ll scare the pants off you?

Here’s a synopsis from A24’s website:

“Imagine the end of the world — Now imagine something worse. Award-winning filmmaker Trey Edward Shults follows his incredible debut feature Krisha with It Comes At Night, a horror film following a man (Joel Edgerton) as he is learns that the evil stalking his family home may be only a prelude to horrors that come from within. Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul.”

Well, that sounds terrifying. Be glad you’ve got six months to stock up on Depends for this one, everybody, as It Comes At Night hits theaters on August 25.
