Beyond Rowling: Fantastic film beasts, and where to stream them

We’re excited to finally watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest entry in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise (by the way, is it even okay to call it that when the movie’s set 70 years before he was born?). The film hits theaters Friday, and its focus on magical monsters and mischief got us thinking: What other creature features are able to stream online through the familiar services? Though we're past Halloween season and creepy critters have, for the most part, gone back under the beds of our imagination, we found eight great movies that we hope you’ll enjoy taking a peek at from the comfort of your home. Maybe you'll stuff one or two deep within the pockets of your mind before you head to the theater this weekend.

Troll 2

Not to be confused with the excellent Boston-based folk band, this might be the best worst movie ever made, according to the cottage industry that’s popped up around this 1990 disasterpiece, and it’s really hard to argue with them It’s full of classic moments that you’ve probably seen floating around on Youtube for years now, but the whole thing is worth a gander as well. The story of a family who goes on vacation to a strangely hospitable small town that’s actually full of goblins (if you thought they were trolls from the title, you’re mistaken), Troll 2 is an excellent party movie, one that will stump you with its weird filmmaking choices one minute and have you rolling on the floor with laughter at the next. It’s a shame that the companion documentary Best Worst Movie was taken off of Netflix last year, because it provides some interesting context, but this film can stand on its own (de)merits.
