Day After Tomorrow: October 8 has been declared Joan Baez Day in Cambridge

Boston has been having quite a bit of fun over the past few years declaring days to honor artists and musicians, from Massachusetts bands like Godsmack to iconic figures like Kathleen Hanna. Now, neighboring Cambridge is getting into the act, declaring Saturday, October 8 — yes, the Day After Tomorrow — as Joan Baez Day.

The declaration, announced yesterday by Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons, coincides with the folk legend’s performance Saturday evening at the Citi Performing Arts Wang Theatre.

Baez rose to fame and influence in the 1960’s folk scene, first performing at Club 47 on Mount Auburn Street (which evolved into nearby Club Passim) in 1958 and then Newport Folk Festival a year later. “[S]he continues to remember Cambridge fondly as a hub of creativity and inspiration,” writes the mayor.
