Above The Flame: Listen to the bands playing this weekend’s Grub, Sweat & Beers BBQ bash

Jim Healey of Shatner knows people piss and moan about there being allegedly nothing cool to do in Boston. So he’s teamed up with Gozu’s Doug Sherman for the second annual Grub, Sweat & Beers, a joint BBQ and rock and metal weekend at O’Brien’s Pub that delivers nearly 20 bands to the Allston rock club tomorrow and Sunday.

And they’re going to stuff your face as hard as they stuff your ear holes.

“Lots of people complaining about the state of live music… well, here is a weekend full of some awesome bands,” Healey tells Vanyaland. “The Boston metal scene never disappoints. Don’t be that guy that says ‘oh that looks like it was awesome, I wish I went'”.

Things kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s bash starts at high noon. Among the participating bands at this year’s Grub, Sweat & Beers include KIND, White Dynomite, ORCumentary, Arctic Horror, Salem Wolves, Keith Bennett of Panzerbastard, Conclave, Birnam Wood, Hepatagua, Wolfsmyth, Upheaval, and others.

“We really wanted to bring a multi-day, heavy-band blow out to Boston,” Healey adds. “Having been to and played Emissions from the Monolith and SHOD (Stoner Hands of Doom), I always felt there were enough awesome heavy bands in the New England area to have our own weekender. Doug and I had talked about it for a few years and decided last year to pull the trigger. We wanted to have a BBQ aspect as part of it as well, but wanted to make sure it would be more than hot dogs and burgers. Ken Cmar killed it last last year, and is back on board this year with the addition of Keith Schleicher. Great bands, great food and sweaty dudes = success.”

The admission price ($10 for Saturday, $15 for Sunday), gets each attendee a plate (no extra charge for all the rock), and food is first-come, first serve. Here’s a partial sampling of what’s on the grill each day:

Day 1: Four smoked pork butts from Keith Schleicher.

Day 2: Smoked meatloaf with BBQ sauce, Huli Huli chicken, grilled pineapple, kielbasa with homemade sauerkraut, jalapeño poppers, and a “Grilled taco party” with fish, chicken barbacoa, and grilled veggies from Ken Cmar.
