It's not too often we get tipped off about musicians or bands via the MLB Network, which is weird because 1) we have it on pretty much 24/7 and 2) baseball and music have a beautiful relationship that goes back several decades. But we were surprised to hear that legendary baseball writer Peter Gammons this morning hyped up Detroit singing group By The Way on MLB Central, and were even more surprised to learn the trio features Darbi Dombrowski, the daughter of Boston Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.
Poppa Dombrowski was hired by the Sox in August of last year after 14 years as the general manager of the Detroit Tigers, and his addition came after everyone here in town already tuned the home team out. And since the 2016 season is only 15 games old, there really hasn't been much of a chance to bring Darbi and the gals into the ballpark's bright stage (at least to our knowledge). But with Fenway's ever-growing concert calendar and the organization's music focus and always on-point soundtrack (yesterday, Fenway DJ TJ Connelly and organist Josh Kantor paid tribute to Prince mid-game as news of his death began to circulate), we're sure By The Way will make their Lansdowne debut very soon.
And they are no strangers to bringing harmony to sporting events. The group sang the National Anthem at Detroit's Comerica Park back in 2014 (their bio says they've also appeared before Tigers and Pistons games), and a few months ago performed live at a Super Bowl 50 VIP party.
