Fall Sparks: Editors release video for ‘Marching Orders,’ create 300 vinyl pressings for Oxfam UK

In April, it felt nice to have Editors back on the scene, as the British post-punk band returned with a minimal vibe in “No Harm”. What was missing, however, was that ambitious rock grandiosity that marked the band’s previous releases, when they were falling somewhere on the spectrum between Joy Division and ’80s-era U2.

Now Editors are back with another new cut, the nearly eight-minute-long “Marching Orders”, and it feels a whole lot like the band we grew to love over the past decade. The song is missing the bite of the band’s razor-sharp early years (see “Munich”, “Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors”), but Tom Smith’s deep growl has a welcome familiarity that’s lacking in most acts of the late-2000s.

“Marching Orders” was recorded by Editors in the Western Highlands of Scotland earlier this year, and was mixed by Alan Moulder. And it has a nice-tie in to a European charity.

Three-hundred hand-stamped 12″ test pressings of the song will be donated to Oxfam UK, and be randomly placed and sold in selected Oxfam stores in the UK, Germany and Belgium.

“We’ve been supporters of Oxfam’s amazing, vital work for many years,” says Smith. “From supporting their Oxfam unwrapped campaign back in Xmas 2007, performing at Oxfam gigs and also hosting Oxfam campaigners on our tours to help raise funds and spread the word about the charity with our fans.”
