Snap Judgement: Newport Folk Festival asks fans to please leave selfie sticks at home

Following the lead of music festivals like Coachella, Ultra, and Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival is asking people to not use selfie sticks at its annual gathering this summer at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island.

Though it isn’t so much a “ban” as it is a suggestion, and they just made the request via Twitter with the usual calm and good sense we’ve come to expect from Newport Folk: Don’t take your own photos — communicate and interact with your friends and those around you.

“Folks we’ve been asked our stance on “selfie-sticks”,” Newport Folk writes. “Please leave them at home. Solution: meet fellow folk & have them take a pic for you.”

Good plan.

This year’s sold-out Newport Folk Fest takes place the weekend of July 24 to 26 and features Roger Waters, the Decemberists, Courtney Barnett, Shakey Graves, Sufjan Stevens, First Aid Kit, Tallest Man On Earth, and more than 40 other bands and artists. Last week, Boston folk trio the Ballroom Thieves were added to the bill.
