‘We never really had a burning of banjos’: Mumford & Sons release Coldplay-esque single

Last week Mumford & Sons released the musical snippet heard ’round the world, a brief taste of new record Wilder Mind that made headlines because of its lack of banjos. Today, as the countdown to the new album’s May 4 release date officially begins, we are treated to Wilder Mind’s first single, “Believe.”

No, it’s not a Cher cover, but it does have a bit of Coldplay to it.

It’s definitely a new sound for the mainstream indie-folk band, though Marcus Mumford says it’s a natural progression for the Babel musicians — and they aren’t burning those banjos just yet.

“We just kind of naturally were phasing out some of the more acoustic instruments,” Marcus tells XFM. “We never really had a big bow-bow. We never really had a burning of banjos… but it was time for us to do something fresh and challenging.”

He adds: “We’re excited about it, it’s a new thing for us. We’re a song-based band and we really like the songs. The sound of the record had to compliment the writing of it and it all happened quite easily, it was quite straightforward.”

There does seem to be something… missing.
