We’re now two weeks into Speedy Ortiz’s December residency at Great Scott in Allston, and the Massachusetts guitar-rock band has already delivered on their promise of “special guests” and “surprises.” Last Friday for the opener of their three-night stand, it was announced earlier that day that winning Local LosersMean Creek would be joining on the bill, filling the “special guest” quota. Last night came both — the special guest was NYers Big Ups, and the surprise (we assume) was Speedy Ortiz closing out a rousing set with a cover of TV On The Radio’s 2003 modern classic, “Young Liars.”
On Facebook today, the band called it a “long-term fantasy,” and on Twitter, singer-guitarist Sadie Dupuis added they “have wanted to cover @TVonTheRadio’s “young liars” for a bunch of years and last night we SCRATCHED THAT ITCH.”
Must have felt as rad as it sounded.
What will go down this Friday when Camp Ortiz close out their festive holiday run? Who knows! We do know that Lemuria, Two Inch Astronaut, Krill, and what’s billed as “one more **super secret guest**” will all take the stage.
With that show being six days before Christmas, it could be Santa Claus.
