This is the fourth in a week-long series of spotlights on the bands and artists performing at our CMJ party with Berklee College of Music this Friday, October 24 at Carroll Place in New York City. Seven Berklee-affiliated acts will participate in Boston & Beyond, an official CMJ Music Marathon showcase that is free to badgeholders and open to the general public (RSVP here). Doors are at 8 p.m. and the show runs until after 1 a.m. More info can be found here and here. To listen to all the participating bands, fire up our Soundcloud playlist.

Several weeks ago when Vanyaland and Berklee came together to sift through the few hundred bands that submitted to play our CMJ party, there were difficult decisions that took hours of debate, and then there were instantly unanimous picks that passed “go” rather quickly. Falling into the latter category was Nashville’s Tumbleweed Company.

The fast-rising alt-folk ensemble feature five Berklee alumni from various parts of the country — Maria Kowalski, Jeff Adamczek, Ryan Toll, Will Cafaro, and Jayme Tardiff — and released new EP Village back in the spring with producer extraordinaire Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) that’s been turning heads across Tennessee.

The band’s various roots shine through on Village, and their formation here in Boston gives their sound a bit of an edge without sacrificing vocal harmony.

Writes the Tennessee Star Journal back in July: “Influenced by different types American folk and their love of rock n’ roll, Tumbleweed Company blends vocal harmonies over an array of acoustic and electric instruments to create something uniquely their own.”

Standout track “Seven Sages”, with its upbeat twang and home-worn sincerity, has been getting a handful of spins on Vanya Radio in anticipation for Friday’s showcase, and no doubt it’ll sound even better live in the backwater environs of exotic Greenwich Village.
