Sound Of Our Town Spotlight: Hip-hop riser Dutch ReBelle is ready for her close up

This is the latest in a series of spotlights on the bands and artists participating in Sound Of Our Town, a free, all-day, and all-ages event at the Lawn On D in South Boston on Saturday, October 4. Sound Of Our Town is a collaborative effort between the Boston Music Awards and Vanyaland, and serves to kick off the BMAs voting season by unveiling the 2014 nominees and showcasing some of the best homegrown acts from our city’s music scene.

Dutch ReBelle is poised for a breakthough. The Haiti-born, Milton-raised rapper is a part of a new breed of Boston MC, and brings her lyrical ruckus to Sound of Our Town fresh off the release of this month’s ReBelle Diaries.

The Improper Bostonian cover girl, who warms up for SOOT with a release party next Friday at the Middle East in Cambridge, has been firing off lyrical wit and wisdom since first catching our attention three years ago with “Beantown Ish.” Her growth as an MC and performer is evident on sinister summer single “Yen,” which stacks up against any other rap joint making national noise.

ReBelle was nominated for a 2013 Boston Music Award in the Hip-Hop Artist Of The Year category, and we’d be pretty damn surprised if she doesn’t show up in a few places on this year’s ballot, which gets unveiled on-site at Lawn On D on October 4.

Wrote the Boston Globe today, in a fantastic piece by Martin Caballero:” Hustling has always been synonymous with hip-hop: not in the slang sense of the word, though that also has its place, but in the general idea that relentless self-promotion and a ubiquitous presence within the scene are basic requirements for contemporary success. From a distance, Dutch ReBelle might seem a paragon of those virtues. In the past year, the Haiti-born, Milton-raised rapper has quickly risen from promising newcomer to legitimate star, headlining local shows and notching a Boston Music Award nomination, while also playing venues outside New England and drawing national attention from the likes of MTV and XXL magazine.”

Get to know Dutch with some tunes below, and prepare for liftoff.
